PTSD should be renamed to Traumatic Stress Injury (TSI) - as it is an injury just like any other combat related injury. We should also examine innovative ways to treat this injury through progressive forms of treatment from point-of-injury to return home. DoD/VA should examine the concepts and tools associated with Time Perspective Therapy (TPT), as advanced by Dr. Philip Zimbardo, Stanford University and Dr. Richard Sword as a treatment means to achieve a balanced Time Perspective and mental well being. Changing the name from disorder to injury is one small step to removing the stigma and changing the way we treat Traumatic Stress Injuries. Developing new treatment protocols and leveraging technology to provide new treatment tools to our healthcare professionals and veterans is the next step. The rising suicide rates among our military and veterans are a tragic testimonial to the need for a new approach - one which allows the establishment of a sense of pride, well being and the hope for a brighter future for all those who have served our nation.

Calling it (post-traumatic) injury is inaccurate; injury is the trauma, not post-trauma. It hardly says anything about it healing or scarring. Disorder is vaugue, but it is not uncommon; we have syndromes in most fields of medicine.

Overcoming stima will be easier when we document any objective signs of disease and benefits of treatment. Omproving these is where professionals should stay invested in.
